This mixed media class invites you to experiment with paint, paper, textures, and more. Each session introduces new tools and techniques to inspire your creativity, with plenty of room to explore your own style. After experimenting with a variety of art tools, you’ll learn how to combine materials such as acrylics, ink, collage, and found objects to create dynamic, layered artwork. No rules, no pressure—just art-making as play and self-expression. *Includes workbook and shadowbox frame for final project. *Dress for a Mess.

This laid-back acrylic painting class is perfect for adults who want to unwind, get creative, and explore the basics of painting in a friendly, supportive setting. Each week we’ll focus on simple techniques—like color mixing, layering, and brushwork—while completing fun, approachable projects. You’ll build confidence, discover your unique painting style, and enjoy the creative process without pressure. No experience needed—just bring your curiosity (and maybe a friend)! Each session includes plenty of time for relaxed painting, conversation, and creativity. *Dress for a Mess.
Supplies List:
Paints :You don’t need every color—just start with a few basics!
Essential colors:
• Titanium White
• Mars Black
• Cadmium Red (or Primary Red)
• Cadmium Yellow (or Primary Yellow)
• Ultramarine Blue (or Primary Blue)
• White Gesso
Tip: Student-grade acrylics like Liquitex Basics, Amsterdam, or Arteza are great for beginners. *Liquitex Basics has a great starter set*
Brushes (optional) * a pack of starter brushes will be provided*
Suggested types:
• Flat brushes: sizes 4, 8, 12
• Round brushes: sizes 2, 6
• Fan brush (for blending or texture) • Palette knife for mixing or texture effects
Tip: Synthetic brushes labeled “for acrylics” work best and are easy to clean.
Surfaces You can paint on canvas, canvas panels, or thick paper. Recommended options:
• 8x10" or 9x12" canvas panels (4-5)
• Acrylic, Watercolor, or mixed media paper pad *at least 140lb (9x12- 11x15)
Tools & Extras
• Palette or disposable palette paper (a sturdy paper plate works, too)
• Water cup or jar (plastic or glass)
• Paper towels or old rag
• Pencil and eraser (for sketching outlines)
• Apron or old shirt (it gets messy—embrace it!)
• Spray bottle (to keep paints wet longer)
• Masking tape (to tape edges or create clean borders)
